Use this blueprint to get a new job.
Last week I was on LinkedIn and a guy messaged me this.
It stuck with me a little bit and this post is me going out of my way to address that.
He said, '𝗶𝘁'𝘀 𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲, 𝘆𝗼𝘂'𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸'
Fair. You can't replicate the emotions that come with being unemployed and having those pressures hanging over you.
BUT, I like to think I have a pretty good grip of what it would take to find something new.
LinkedIn is dominated with advice from people that, frankly speaking, aren’t qualified to give it.
An individual's experience of the job market and how best to navigate it, does not outweigh consistent patterns and trends that we analyse and experience on a daily basis.
If I ever found myself in that position, this is exactly what I'd do.
P.S. It's a blueprint stolen from what I know a bunch of people have used with great success.
1) I'd apply to any LinkedIn Job Adverts that were relevant but I wouldn't sit back and wait around on those - they're bonuses if anyone comes back.
Similarly, I might put myself on the radar of a few Recruiter’s but I wouldn’t lean on those to find me my next role.
If you're banking on either of these alone to find your next role, you're in big trouble.
Job adverts have a less than 1% chance of success based on the number of applicants vs who gets the job (spoiler: sometimes it’s not someone who has applied but a direct source).
Similarly Recruiter’s work in niches of niches and at usually senior levels. I am in a position to help (not through choice but realities of the market) less than 0.5% of people that reach out to me.
My approach would be completely centered around an approach that puts the job search into my own hands and gives me as much control as possible.
You owe it to yourself to emulate this and not be dependent on someone else doing their job correctly to set you up in your next role.
2) This is key: I would be the most proactive candidate you'd ever seen.
↳ Post 3-4 times a week with industry relevant news - who knows who it might reach?
↳ Engage with people in my network by commenting and being visible across their posts.
↳ Max out my 100 Connections each week with industry figures.
↳ Map out the companies I want to work with and actively target them.
↳ Reach out to Decision Makers directly through LinkedIn and Email.
↳ Follow up with anyone senior who views my profile.
↳ Network, network, network.
If you’re in the market at the moment, use the above as a checklist. If you’re not doing all of the above and more then you’re not going to beat out people that are.
You are operating in the world’s most competitive job market. You need to act like it. It will feel like a full time role in itself, but that’s the nature of the beast.
3) Finally, I would choose to not take anything personally and know that it can be a numbers game in certain industries.
Ghosted? Not the sort of company you'd want to work for anyway. .
Didn't get the role? Wasn't meant to be. Onto the next one.
Not hearing back? Keep going.
I know a lot of people who naturally get very down when their efforts aren't met with results.
You can't let that negativity carry over to your approach as it’s only going to perpetuate a cycle that repeats itself over and over again.
You’ve been hired before, you will again. The markets are tough right now globally. There’s a lot of people out of work. You owe it to yourself to keep going.
