The Truth About Being an Expat
This is your sign.
People say living abroad changes you - I think that's rubbish.
There’s an article which I found a couple of years back which I’ll link to here. (https://hbr.org/2018/05/how-living-abroad-helps-you-develop-a-clearer-sense-of-self)
The core of it is, you do grow in-line with your environment but it's actually more you develop a clearer sense of self, who you are and what you stand for.
I 100% believe in this and it's part of the reason why I'd encourage anyone looking to take a risk and try life overseas to do so.
Across our MCG Talent offices in Dubai and Hong Kong we have a majority expat make-up from all over the world.
A lot of the readers of this Newsletter will also be expats and be able to relate to the reason why we continue down this path away from family.
It's not 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 related to finances.
I'd be lying if I said I still wasn't hit with the occasional culture shock or head scratcher moments, whether that is in Dubai or in Hong Kong where I spend a part of my time.
Dubai might be a softer introduction to living abroad given the large expat community and general lifestyle, but it’s not without its moments.
People whose perception of Dubai comes from time spent here on holiday would be in for an awakening when they go through the various hurdles to try and get set up here personally and professionally.
It’s a new country, only 53 years old. What it has achieved in such a short space of time is unbelievable.
That it might be less efficient in some other areas vs places like the UK is hardly surprising.
I’m currently in Hong Kong, spending time with our office here and if there’s a place that pushes the limits of your comfort zone, it’s this place.
The idea for this week's Newsletter actually came from standing on the corner of a coffee shop in Sheung Wan, Hong Kong where I was hit with a couple of thoughts.
- Who is going to bulk buy the dried eels and bags of jellyfish in the shop opposite?
- Why is there an 80 year old man wearing childrens pyjamas in the street?
It's exposure to the craziness of the world which makes you question and realign on what you thought you knew/maybe took for granted.
I have only spent four and a half years of my life living outside of the UK so far - I'm hardly an expert and have so much left to do and see.
But, would I go down this path all over again?
100% and I’d encourage anyone else who is looking to do the same to give it a go as well.
I think most people who have made the move would also echo my thoughts.
