Quick Thoughts - System Reboot
This time last week I knew that I was in need of a system reboot.
I’ve been in a bit of a rut personally and professionally and it was very obvious that I wasn’t operating at my usual frequency.
I felt flat, my focus was scattered and I felt uninspired. I can’t explain how desperate I’ve been to get out of this and back to normal as it’s so far from my natural state.
There’s a few compounding factors which contributed to this:
I’m turning 30 incredibly soon (quarter life crisis).
The situation in the Middle East has dominated my headspace.
This has had knock on effects to our business - as it has for many.
What is normally manageable started to lag and simple decisions and productivity metrics were way down. I wasn’t particularly fun to be around and I was running the same loop every day (scroll news, gym, work, home, work) and taking nothing from it.
Something had to change.
I will quickly add that I try to stay as self aware as possible when I write these. I know that my problems pale in comparison to what many around the world are facing right now.
I also think it’s important to acknowledge when we’re off-balance and it’s a conversation piece that keeps coming up in speaking to a range of people over the last few weeks. I know many are in the same boat right now.
The good news is that I found small recalibrations can have outsized effects in a short-span of time.

Zen settings in Hong Kong to match the theme this week.
In an attempt to turn things around, I became quite obsessed with the Pareto Principle - the idea that 20% of your activities generate 80% of your results.
What were the 20% of actions that give me 80% of my happiness, energy and clarity and how could I scale those?
Long story short, I realised a major trigger was that I was spending too much time glued to a screen, online, working silly hours or just doom scrolling the news (the inverse also works - this 20% of my time was driving 80% of my unhappiness).
I felt happiest when I was away from this, spending time outside, with friends/family and engaging with others.
Quick fixes:
Signed up to play football for the first time in about five years. ridiculously humbling, but it reminded me how good it feels to move, get away from a screen, and be part of a team sport.
I attended a bunch of in‑person networking events, which completely reignited my passion for business and reconnected me with people who are genuinely motivated and optimistic - that’s so infectious.
Gave my phone to my partner when we went out for dinner/coffees and asked her not to give it back to me, no matter what. Turns out I can survive without checking my emails and if anything I’m 100x more present.
Small fixes that helped move the needle back in the right direction.
My previous style - and toxic trait I am trying to unlearn - is to do more and more and more when things go wrong. I usually end up just digging a deeper hole.
Turns out there’s merit to just doing less of the wrong things.
How are you feeling at the moment and did any of the above resonate?
In the meantime, here’s our live roles for the week.
Live Roles - APAC and MENA
Slightly different one this week due to the ongoing situation in the Middle East.
It’s not fair for us to be presenting a live job list for MENA while it’s both a public holiday for Eid and when we don’t have a clear grasp of the situation so we’re only sharing APAC roles this week.
Fingers crossed for a resolution soon so we can get back to BAU.
