We're all racing to find the right AI tool, the right prompt, the right workflow.

Meanwhile, we've sidelined the fastest communication tool ever invented.

The phone call

Three things happened to me in the last 48 hours:

1) A bank issue - 3 days of back-and-forth over email. Called in. Sorted in 30 seconds.

2) Interview scheduling - 4 exchanges with a client on availability. Called. Done in under a minute.

3) Feedback I'd been chasing for over a week and emails being ignored. One phone call. Instant resolution.

Every single one started with email as the first resort. Every single one was solved in seconds by picking up the phone.

The weirdest part? How surprised everyone was that I called. Like it was completely out of the ordinary.

Remember when we had to add credit to our phones to be able to call? When did we stop actually using them?

In my first job in recruitment, we had call times tracked on a shared leaderboard. The target was 2 hours a day on the phone. There's only so many times you can leave a voicemail to yourself before you actually have to start dialling.

That training rewired how I communicate and it holds to this day. Nothing I've seen this year - no tool, no prompt, no workflow - has matched the speed of a 30-second phone call.

The same applies if you're job searching right now. Everyone's doing the same thing: Easy Apply → follow-up → email → wait → repeat.

We've overcomplicated communication.

If something's stuck, pick up the phone.

Here’s an old school Recruitment tip. Call landline of X company. Ask to speak to Y about the job they’re advertising.

Best case = put through and you have a direct chat with the decision maker.

Worst case = They leave a message and your name is there.

Everyone is hiding behind email and Easy Apply right now. The bar for standing out has never been lower. One phone call has the potential to put you ahead of 500 applicants who won't make one.
