Define your value-add

When we talk about ‘value’ from a candidate perspective, it’s linked to what you personally bring to a role that sets you apart from everyone else and is linked to your previous achievements.

So often we see this misrepresented in applications.

It’s great that you’ve done the role before, or might be passionate about the industry but these things aren’t differentiators in a crowded market.

In fact, too often they’re placed secondary to motivations. When people reach out to me asking for assistance with moving to the region, it's usually led with:

- "It's my dream to move to Dubai"

- "I've got friends and family in the region and I’d love to join them"

- "I'm moving to Dubai in X months time and need a job"

Having passion and showing a clear willingness to move to the region are crucial, but there’s a time and a place to showcase these.

From the perspective of a Hiring Manager receiving the above, who is making a split-second decision on whether to engage with your profile - where’s the value-add?

What are they seeing that immediately suggests someone is a great fit for their business?

The outreaches are tied to personal circumstances and showcase little around any competencies or skills that you might be able to bring to the table, which are far more important.

Defining your value-add is important as it’s what’s going to get you noticed. wtfIn an environment where it's hard enough to get seen, it's so important your first impression is fine-tuned to give you the best chance of success.

A Hiring Manager likely gets hundreds of messages a week, and even if they do go on to mention skills and experiences, they might not make it that far if they think it’s another ‘I love Dubai’ message.

Your goal is to immediately position yourself as not just a ‘fit’ for a role but someone that can go above and beyond and add value to their operations.

The correct approach to outreach would be to carefully craft a narrative around what skills you can bring to the table and how they can benefit a business.

As much as we are big believers in ‘people hire people’, relevance and experience with a particular role are the prerequisite for all applications.

If you're at a point in your career where you can pursue a new role in Dubai, then you no doubt have a CV full of achievements.

You’re likely to have a few years of experience behind you and proven examples within that of where you have achieved success in your role.

It’s vital you put those front and centre in your outreach.
